Note: Poet Baltasar del Alcazar (1530-1606), in his poem "CENA JOCOSA", Oxford, Clarendon Press wrote about Lope de Sosa and his wife Ines, and that they lived in Jaen.

Lope de Sosa and his wife Dona Ines de Cabrera were originally from city of Cordoba, Spain.

Lope served as the acting Governor of the Canary Islands, and later he was appointed Governor of Tierra Firme, Castilla de Oro, Old Panama.

In 1530, his eldest son, Don Juan Alonso de Sosa, was appointed Royal Treasurer of Nueva Espana. While in Mexico City, Juan Alonso was married to Dona Ana de Estrada, the daughter of the former Royal Treasurer, Don Alonso de Estrada and Dona Mariana Gutierrez Flores de la Caballeria.

This is the FIRST recorded Sosa in the New World.

Murder of a Member of the 1598 New Mexico Expedition

A native of New Spain, Captain Alonso Sosa Albornoz, one of the founders of the mines at San Martin,

was born in 1550 at Xochitla, New Spain (Mexico). He was the son of Don Francisco de Sosa Albornoz and Dona Inés de Tapia and a descendent of the Royal Treasurer of New Spain, Don Alonso de Estrada.

He was married twice. His first marriage occurred in 1565 to Dona Juana Ramirez, a native of New Spain, and born about 1550. After the death of his first wife, Captain Alonso married the Dona Beatris Navarro Rodriguez. This marriage took place on or about 1589 in Mexico City. Dona Beatris was much younger than her husband, having been born in 1564. She was the daughter of Don Juan Navarro and Dona Maria Rodriguez

Captain Alonso is listed on the January 8, 1598 muster of the officials and soldiers who enlisted in the Valley of La Puana for Governor Don Juan de Onate's expedition into New Mexico. On the muster, his belongings included a servant, harquebus (a early type of portable gun supported on a hooked staff), and complete armor plate for himself and his horse. Also in this expedition was his wife Dona Beatriz and their five children. It is possable that his children from his previous marriage may have also accompanied him. By the time of this expedition these children would have been older than eighteen years and could have gone their separate ways.

As one of New Mexico's first settlers, he would be executed for requesting to be transfer back to New Spain. This settlement was located in the far frontier of Spain's vast Empire. Finding itself removed from all civilization, this harsh land was rendering the settlers to extreme hardships. Not wanting to endure any further hardship, Captain Alonso asked for permission to return his family to New Spain. At first his request had granted, but apparently to prevent a mutiny, the governor had second thoughts. It is recorded that Governor Juan de Ońate ordered Don Alonso's killing and in 1601, under the command of Don Vicente de Zaldivar, Captain Alonso was ambushed and killed.

After Don Alonso's death, and finding herself completely vulnerable in a hostile and remote environment, Dona Beatris would married a native of Tenerife, Canary Island, Spain, Captain Bernabe de las Casas. This marriage took place in New Mexico. This marriage provided her the security and protection for her and her five children. Her marriage to Bernabe would add five additional children.

Captain Alonso Sosa Albornoz and Dona Beatris Navarro Rodriguez had the following child: Ana Sosa Albornoz was born in Mexico around 1590. She married Alonso Farias Trevińo in Nuevo León. He was the son of Don Juan Farias and Dona Maria de Trevińo Quintanilla. There are many descendants of Captain Alonso who are the progeny of his daughter, Ana Sosa Albornoz.

A testimony of some information written in this city the past year of 1635 before the General Fernando de Sosa Suárez, Knight of the Order of Santiago, Corregidor of this city, and Estabn Bernal, Public Scirbe, in which both eye-witnesses, and witnesses who have heard, declared with certainty that he is the legitimate son of Captain Alonso de Sosa Albornoz and dońa Juana Ramírez, and grandson, through the maternal [sic paternal] side, of Francisco de Sosa Albornoz and dońa Inéz de Tapia, his wife, and great-grandson of Esteban de Sosa and dońa Ana de Albornoz, and on his maternal side, a grandson of Gabriel Ramírez. The said dońa Inés de Tapia, his grandmother, was a daughter of Andrés de Tapia, conquistador, pacifier, and settler of this Nueva Espańa and City of Mexico, Lieutenant Captain General and Maese de Campo in the said conquest; and who came here in the company of Hernando Cortés, first Marqués del Valle. And, that the said Francisco de Sosa Albornoz, his grandfather, was one of the discoverers, conquistadors, and pacifiers of the kingdoms of Nueva Galicia and Nueva Vizcaya, serving His Majesty in the said provinces at his cost, and was among the first Alcaldes Mayores in the royal mines of Sain, San Martín, and Sombrerete, and he settled the Valley of Xuchíl, the royal mines of Chalchiguites, and the Villa of Nombre de Dios, in which he spent a considerable amount of his estate. And, that the said Alonso de Sosa, his father, was one of the captains named for the discovery and conquest of the New Mexico, and he took his wife and children, taking carts with much supplies, arms, munitions, and soldiers with arms and horses, all at his expense; and he constructed houses in the first settlement of San Juan de los Caballeros and in the second named San Pedro. For all of this he had sold the haciendas that he had, for which he obtained more than sixty thousand pesos, all of which he expended in it, leaving his children poor when he died. And, the said Andrés de Sosa assisted with his said father in the said conquest and pacification of the New Mexico, participating in all the entradas and affrays, and on many occasions that were offered, he carried out the orders that were given as a good soldier. And, the above mentioned, and his antecedents, served His Majesty and were noble persons, caballeros hidalgos, old Christians without stain, nor Moorish race, nor Jewish, nor of the newly converted to our Holy Catholic faith, and as such noble persons they were guarded by and they guarded all the exemptions, liberties, and exceptions of the noble hidalgos, according to the law of Spain, in the company of the said Captain don Alonso de Sosa Albornoz, his father.

TESTAMENTO del Capitan Diego González

*Inventarios de los bienes que quedaron al fallecimiento del Capitán Diego González, ante el Teniente y Alcalde Mayor don Cristóbal José González. Santa Teresa de los Higueras, ańo de 1728.

En nombre de Dios Todopoderoso, amén, Sepan cuantos esta carta testamento por última, voluntad vieren como yo Capitán Diego González, vecino de este Valle del Carrizal, hijo legitimo del Sargento Mayor Diego González y Dońa María de Ochoa, difuntos y vecinos que fueron de la Villa de Cadereyta, allandome como me allo en cama de enfermedad que Dios Nuestro Seńor se ha servido darme y en mi entero juicio, temiéndome de la muerte como cosa naturala todo criatura viviente, poniendo como mi abogada, intersesora a la siempre virgen María, nuestra Seńora y al glorioso patriarca seńor don José y al glorioso patriarca seráfico seńor San Francisco y al ángel de mi guarda para que intersedan con nuestro seńor Jesucristo, me perdone mis culpas y ponga mi alma en carrera de salvación. Creyendo como creo firmemente en el misterio de la Santísima Trinidad, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo, tres personas distintas y uno solo Dios verdadero, que vive y reina para siempre y en todo aquelloque cree y confiesa la Santa madre Iglesia Católica, apostólica y Romana, que bajo cuya fe creencia he vivido y protesto vivir y morir y con esta vocación y a su servicio hago otorgar este mi testamento mi última voluntad en la forma manuscrito siguuiente:

Primeramente encomiendo mi alma a Dios nuestro seńor, que la crió y remimió con el precio de su preciosísima sangre, muerte y pasión y el cuerpo mandó a la tierra de que fue formado y cuando de este mundo me vaya, quiero que sea sepultado en la Parroquia de la Ciudad de Monterrey, en la capilla de dońa María de Trevińo, con su consentimiento y en caso de no asentir quiero se me

diga una misa cantada y mi cuerpo sea amortajado con el hábito de nuestro seráfico padre San Francisco. Y también mando que el funeral y entierro sea como las mandas y saque de mis bienes. Y también declaro deber al Capitán Gregorio de Trevińo lo que dijese por unas puertas digo dos, al consumar costumbre a cinco pesos que le tengo dados mando se le paguen. Y también declaro deber al Capitán don Juan García de Pruneda, seis cargas de tabals de aserrín, mando se la paguen. Y también declaro deber a Antonio digo Ignacio Gutiérrez, lo que dijere de más mando se le pague. Y también declaro no deber a persona alguna no obstante si alguna persona pareciese demandando

alguna cosa, como no pase de cinco pesos, con simple juramento, mando se le paguen.

Y también declaro deberme mi yerno don Pedro José de los Santos, la cantidad de 455 pesos y 4 reales que me quedó debiendo de todas las cuents y suplemento que le hice para tratar y contratar y liquidado restando dicha cantidad, mando se le cobren. Y también declaro deberme mi compadre

Rodrigo Martínez que me quedó debiendo el ańo pasado, y también me debe seis fraégas de maiz al precio de dos pesos.

Y me debe dicho mi compadre 10 pesos de venta de cabras que tiene, mando le cobren. Y también declaro me es deudor Andrés Martínez de 30 pesos en primales de venta de 300 cabras que tiene, mando se le cobren. Y también me debe Miguel Martínez 20 pesos de venta de 200 cabras demando al tiempo se le cobren.

Y también declaro me debe Matías de Urdiales 30 pesos, 20 de dependencias y 10 de venta de 100 cabras de vent, mando se le cobren.

Y también declaro deberme el Capitán Pedro de Montes, vecino de la Villa de Saltillo, doce pesos procedidos por unas burras, mando se le cobren. Y también me debe el bachiller Don José de la Garza, cura de Saltillo, dos pesos procedido de unas misas que mandé decir en México, mando se le cobren. Y también declaro deberme Rosa Martínez, 100 pesos, es mi voluntad perdonarselos, mando no se le cobren. Y también me es deubor Juan Antonio Escamilla, de 43 pesos, mando se le cobren. Y también me es deudor el Capitán Felipe de Uribe, de 10 pesos que le pagué a don Antonio García, vecino de México, mando se le cobren. Y también me deben los bienes de mi compadre Thomás Sánchez, difunto la cantidad de 140 primiales a los cuales tengo proveidos 4 obejas, un primal y dos borregos que escafaldo lo dicho lo demando se le cobren.

Y también declaro me debe mi compadre Antonio de Montes la cantidad de 9 pesos de fanégas y ocho pesos, mando se le cobren. Más el dicho me debe 5 varas y un peso de recaudo que monta ocho pesos, mando se le cobren.

Y también declaro me es deudor Salvador Rodríguez 33 pesos y un tomín proseidos unos carneros, mando se le cobren. Y también declaro por mis bienes 2300 cabezas de ganado de pelo en una briada. Y también declaro por mis bienes 200 cabezas de lana chico y grande. Y también declaro que tengo 500 cabezas de ganado de engorda las cuales han de matar, mi yerno don P. José de los Santos y el producto que saliere la mitad se saquen los costos. Declaro mis bienes 100 cabras de vientre que tiene en renta RodrigoMartínez. Y también declaro 300 cabras que tiene Andrés Martínez.

Y también declaro por mis bienes la renta de 200 cabras de vientre que tiene Miguel Martínez.

La renta de 300 cabras de vientre que tiene mi hermano Alonso de Trevińo. La renta de 200 cabras de vientre que tiene Francisco de Montes. La renta de 200 cabras de vientre que tiene Salvador Marcelo.

La renta de 200 cabras de vientre que tiene José de la Garza. La renta de 200 cabras de vientre que tiene la viuda de Thomás Sánchez.

La renta de 200 cabras de vientre que tiene Juan de Dios de la Garza.

La renta de 260 cabras de vientre de Miguel Flores. La renta de 100 cabras de vientre que tiene Matías de Trevińo, me debe 8 pesos atrasados de renta.

La renta de 100 cabras de vientre que tiene mi hermano Santiago de Trevińo.

Y también declaro por mis bienes 20 yeguas de vientre, 50 caballos mansos de rienda, 5 mulas y machos mansos, 4 aparejados atavidos con 4 cargas de costales de baqueta, 14 mulas quebrantadas y mansas, 1449 pesos que me debe don Antonio Garza, vecino de México.

Y también declaro que a mi hermano Juan González, no le debo cosa alguna pues aunque le presté un vestido de pańo de Inglaterra, todo franjeado, el dicho me envió una mula prieta en la inteligencia que con un machito, una mula, me las presentó en caso de sertvir de no ser así se le vuelvan las

bestias mulares. Y también declaro por mis bienes un solar que está en la Villa de Cadereyta, el cual le presté a mi hermano Juan González, con la condición de que me mandara decir 100 misas por las almas de mi padre y madre y si no lo ha ejecutado asi, se quede con él. Y también declaro por

mis bienes una casa vivienda en la la actualmente vive mi hermano Antonio de Trevińo. Y también declaro por mis bienes la casa vivienda en la que actualmente vivo, que se compone de una sala aposento con un alto. Y también declaro por mis bienes 50 sitios de ganado menor que compré a don

Luis de Monterde, vecino de México, los cuales sitios están en este Puesto de las Higueras, que costaron 2500 pesos en reales. Y aunque se me otorgó escritura que Antonio Guardado, apoderado del dich don Luis de Monterde, y se metió en posicián sin contradicción ninguna de los circunvecinos y habiéndoseme ofrecido después pleito sobre dicha pocesión de tierra me fue presiso reclamar con dichos instrumentos por manos de don Jan de Angelo, al referido don Luis de Monterde, para que declarase la contradicción que hacían y no entendido razón, mando se reclame para seguridad de dichas tierras, aunque paran en nuestro poder las mercedes.

Y también declaro por mis bienes un pedazo de tierra que está en el arroyo del Orégano ara la falda de la sierra a lindar con Antonio Guerra. Y también declaro haberle dado a Domingo Mireles, sincuenta pesos en San Juan del Río que en cambio de tres cargas de sal de once almudes cada carga, mando se le requiera.

Y que en aquí en que se pague que por sus cartas se reconozca.

Y también declaro por mis bienes una mulata escalava llamada Francisca de la Cruz. Y también una mulata llamada Rosa esclava, que costó 150 pesos y Francisca 400 pesos. Y también declaro por mis bienes seis mulatos blancos y una mulata del mesmo color, hijos de la dicha Francisca, llamados; Juan Antonio, Miguel, Santiago, Gregorio, José, Antonio, Domingo y Juana María.

Y también mando que todos los esclavos contenidos no salgan del cuerpo de la Hacienda, poque no se deteriore y quedan en poder de mi esposa y hijos del segundo matrimonio. Y que mis hijos del primer matrimonio se les debiere algo de lo que descupiere de la herencia por mi parte se les entregue en los demas bienes que habiere y esto es mii voluntad.

Y también declaro por mis bienes un arcabuz, con su funda, tres pistolas, una espada, una daga, un espadín, una silla, todo de mi propiedad. Y tambińén unas espuelas, un freno, un cuchillo. Y también mando que dicha mi silla y un caballo si Dios fuere servido en llevarme se le den a Xavier mulato, mi sirviente con freno, con mas se le den 60 pesos que es mi voluntad por lo bien que me ha servido a cada vada que sea la matanza. Y también declaro tener en mi poder 72 chivo. El Ospisio de Boca de Leónes, con más todos los borregos y carneros que están seńalados y saverlos que son mis hijos mando se entreguen. Y también declaro estar entregando de matanza 45 carneros ańejos cargados, de mi yerno Santos, mando se le entreguen. Y también declaro que fui casado y velado segun la Santa Madre Yglesia con dońa Anastacia de Trevińo y durante el matrimonio tuvimos y preocreamos por nuestros legítimos hijos legítimos a, Catarina, Antonia, María, Diego, Nicolás y Francisca Javiera González. Y también declaro que al tiempo y cuando nos casamos entrá en mi poder la cantidad de 800 pesos de dote y yo metí dos manados de yeguas, una de 25 y otra de 30 yeguas todas manas, de

rienda, 6 caballos mansos, 7 mulas aparejados mansas. Y también declaro que por fin y muerte de dicho mi esposa, se hicieron inventarios y que se halló de caudal y teníamos la cantidad de 8049 pesos como consta en dicho inventario y habiendo sacado a quinto quedó liquidado de la parte de mi

esposa, lo que constara. Y también declaro que al tiempo y cuando puse en mis hijas e hijos les dí en dote lo que consta en mis memorias que se llenan, cerradas con cubierta firmadas todas de mi mano y nombre y mando se este lo que consta en ellas por ser cierto y verdadero para el descargo de

mi consiencia.

Y también declaro le soy deudor a mi yerno Bartolomé Elizondo de doscientos pesos en reales, mando se le paguen, luego que salga el dinero que esta en Mésico.

Y también declaro que soy casado y velado según orden de nuestra Santa Madre Yglesia de segundo matrimonio con dońa Ana Caballero y durante nuestro matrimonio, hemos tenido y procreado por nuestros hijos legítimos a Juan Diego, María Gertrudis, Lucas, Miguel, María Theresa, José, Lazaro, María Margarita, Ignacio de Jesús, María Catarina González.

Y también declaro ue al tiempo y cuando nos casamos no metí mis bienes para más el vestuario usual. Y también declaro que para contraer nupcias con la dicha mi esposa, prometí dotarla con 700 pesos, de que no hice instrumento pero he estado siempre en ejecutar lo mando. Como desde luego compré una negra llamada Martina, con un hijo llamado Pedro, que mandé se hiciese la escritura como se hizo a su favor que costó 412 pesos, aunque la aparté de mis bienes, pues en la décima parte de lo que yo tuve al tiempo de contraer matrimonio cupo dicha manda.

Y en esta conformidad mando se le aparte el derecho que tiene. Y también declaro que no se lellegue a las Casas, ni a su ropa, ni a su lecho, por haber entrado vestida, en mi poder y con su cama y ser de derecho y mi última voluntad y otro para el valor en la promesa de la dote. Y también declaro que puse en estado de matrimonio a mi hija dońa Gertrudis González, con Pedro José de los Santos y le dí en dote 1600 pesos y constara por carta de dote.

Y también declaro que después de casado en segundo matrimonio me llevaron mi caballada los indios enemigos y tuve otros contratiempos y después ha buscado el caudal con que me hallo. Y también declaro aberles dado a mis hijos Juan Diego una manadita de 22 potrancas y un potrillo sebruno y un yerro de errar para que los yerre. Y también declaro haberle dado a mi hijo Lucas 10 potrancas y un potro. Y también declaro haberle dado a mi hijo Miguel 10 yeguas con su potro, las cuales yeguas mencionadas me costaron a dos reales y así mando no se le quiten ni entren en partivisión, los mejores con esa cantidad en el quinto de mis bienes. Y también declaro por mis

legítimos herederos a los dichos mis hijos de ambos matrimonios para que iguales los segundos queden de lo que les correspondiere. Con la bendición de Dios y la mía para pagar y cumplir este mi testamento, mando llegados en el contenido instituyo por mi albacea a mi esposa dońa Ana Caballero y don Pedro José de los Santos, mi yerno para la entera satisfacción que tengo a los cuales cedo el poder y la facultad que se requiere y es necesario, para usar dicho alvacargo con general. Y no embargante se ha pasado el ańo que el derecho les concede que yo les subrogo a más tiempo que fuere necesario para el cumplimiento de dichos testamento.

Y por este mi testamento revoco, anulo otros cualesquiera testamentos, codisilios o memorias que haya hecho que quiero que no valgan. salvo este que al presente hago y otorgo ante el presente juez que declaro por postrímera y última voluntad y quiero se guarde, se cumpla y ejecute como en

el se contiene. Y el otorgante a que yo el Capitán don Cristóbal González, teniente alcalde de este Valle de Carrizal doy fe y conocerlo que al parecer está en su entero juicio así lo otorgó y firmó allándose presentes a su otorgamiento el Bachiller don Miguel Cantú, teniente de cura de este Valle.

Don Francisco Xavier de Isla y Palacio y don Rodrigo Martínez Vecinos de la Jurisdicción de este rieno. Y autorizo este testamento en manera que se haga fe acuando como Juez Rector a falta de Escribano Público que no le hay en esta Jurisdicción y lo firmé y van en el presente papel para no

hacerlo sellado en este viene con cargo de escribir los derechos reales y me pidió y suplicó el otorgante se lo dejase original y yo el dicho juez se lo concedí y entré en este hecho en esta asienda de las Higueras, en 1 de septiembre de 1728 ańos. Así mismo declaro al otorgante que se hallen en su poder 300 cabras de vientre y 50 obejas que pertenecen a Diego González, su hijo las cuales ha tenido en su poder en arrendamiento y tiene pagado la renta que manda le entregen por suyas propias.

Doy Fé.

Y también dijo el declarante que las sien cabras que tiene arrendadas su compadre don Rodrigo Martínez en caso de fallecer es su voluntadf que no se le pidan porque se las da a sus dos hijas; Ana María y Antona Margarita, por ser su voluntad.

Rodrigo Martínez, Miguel Martínez. Y va este testamento en cinco fojas escritas y una blanca. Doy Fé.

En dicha Hacienda en 2 dias del mes de agosto de dicho ańo, ante mi el Capitán Cristóbal González, Teniente Alcalde de este dicho Valle por su magestad, presento al Capitán don Diego González, el testamento que otorgó el día 1 de dicho mes y me presentó que se habían quedado por declarar

algunos bienes y algunas cláusulas. Y que así me suplicaba se pusiese en forma que visto por mí le otorgué suplemento. Y en forma siguiente.

Primera declara thener un retablo de Nuestra Seńora de Guadalupe, la cual declara por bienes suyos. Un vestido de pańo de Inglatera que se compone de calzones llanos y capisayo.

Y declara por sus bienes. Y también declara por sus bienes un armador de razo con mangas de tela y otro del dicho razo sin mangas, usados lo declara por sus bienes. Y también un coleto largo de ante, y también dos camisas, dos pares de calzones blancos buens, y también y también dos pares de medias de seda usadas. Y también un capote de pańo Queretano usado. Y también dos balonas, una buena y otra mala. Y también un crusifijo de bronce y dos de los dichos uno de madera, los dos pequeńos. Y también declara 40 tablas Carlos Cuin, vecino de los Lermas, Manda se le cobren.

Y también declara tener en esta asienda como en la laguna, 30 tablas que declara por sus bienes. Y También declara tener una daga de suvio y también declara una barra de hierro, tres anchas y un azadón ya usado. Y también declara por sus bienes una mesa pequeńa y un espejo. y también declara por sus bienes, un jarro de plata con su salbilla y un salero, dos cucharas, todo viejo y usado. Y también declara una silla de correguela usada esta del tío de su esposa. Y también declara que las dos cláusulas que están en su testamento de 100 cabras que deben su hermano Santiago de Trevińo y Matías de Trevińo, es su voluntad no se les cobren, por ser pobres y fallidos. Y también declara que la casa que está mencionada en la cláusula del Santo Testamento que está en el Carrizal en que vive su hermano Antonio de Trevińo es su voluntad su importe se refunda en misas por el alma de dońa Anastacia de Trevińo, su esposa. Y declara que es su voluntad que el solar que tiene mencionado en la cláusula estar en la Villa de Cadereyta en caso de querer cumplir su hermano

don Juan González, cumplir lo que decían en la dicha cláusula se venda y su importe de refunda en misas para sus padres que es su última voluntad. Y también declara que guardadas y cumplidas las cláusulas expresadas en su testamento como en este codisilio asi la manada de las yeguas en sus hijos como lo demás y su funeral y entierro que se de del quinto y en caso de sobrar alguna cosa es su voluntad entre al cuerpo de los bienes y que de ello gocen sus herederos por partes iguales.

Y también dijo el otorgante que en caso de haber separado algunos bienes su esposa los manifestara y que es su última voluntad. Y otorgó este codisilio en forma que haya lugar en derecho agregándose al testamento y sus cláusulas, salbo las mencionadas en este codisilio. Así lo otorgó y firmó, conmigo dicho Juez y los testigos de asistencia, allándose presentes en este codisilio, los testigos mencionados en el testamento.

Diego González murió de día 20 de octubre de 1728.

She descends from his mother, Dona Catalina de Salazar de Cadena and her first marriage to Don Ruy Diaz de Mendoza. A daughter from this first marriage, Dona Magdalena de Mendoza Salazar and her husband, Don Vicente de Saldivar y Onate are ancestors of Dona Josefa de la Garza.

Another participant in the colonization of New Mexico (USA), and an ancestor of this group is Bernabé de las Casas, who married Dona Beatriz Navarro, the daughter of Don Juan Navarro, a founder of Saltillo. Beatriz was the first wife of Captain Alonso de Sosa Albornoz, killed in New Mexico by orders of Ońate. Alonso’s grandfather was the Conquistador Don Andrés de Tapia, perhaps the most trustworthy and reliable of the captains of the Marquis del Valle de Oaxaca, Hernán Cortés.
